Polina Stroganova was born in Russia and is now based in Mexico City, after having lived in seven other cities, including four different countries. She was a member of the documenta12 Educational Department, Director of Crone’s satellite gallery in Berlin, and served as Director of 401contemporary in London. She holds a Masters of Cultural Studies from the University of Lüneburg, with a major in Contemporary Art Theory and Art History.
In 2013 she moved to Mexico City where she co-curated projects with Sofía Mariscal of Galería MARSO, alongside her participation as Special Advisor at Material Art Fair’s first edition. She serves as Director of Proyectos Monclova since 2014.
One of the questions I had in mind while arriving at Polina’s place was if she had an art collection. Silly question, I know, due to the fact that she is a gallerist, never the less it was a question that lingered in my mind. I once read that Marina Abramović doesn’t have a single piece of art hanging on her walls. My doubt about whether she collected became evident the moment I walked into her space. Polina has art all over the place.
Her collection includes works by Martín Soto Climent, Edgar Orlaineta, Gabriel de la Mora, Ištvan Išt Huzjan, SANGREE, Chantal Peñalosa, Michael Sailstorfer, Roni Horn, Tomás Díaz Cedeño, Carlos Lara, Mauro Bonacina, Daniel Sinsel, Michael Conrads, Philomene Pirecki, Tjorg Douglas Beer, Malte Urbschat, Ben Greber, Adrien Missika, Ursula Mayer, Benoît Maire, Julius Heinemann, Maggie Madden, among several others
PS: A lot of things, I guess open-mindedness.
YH: Whats the thing you miss the most about Russia?
PS: Russians have this warm sense of humor that’s difficult to explain because they can have a very tough mentality and at the same time a particularly great generosity.
YH: What drove you to pursuing a career in art?
PS: I grew up in an artistic and creative sphere. Both my parents were architects and they used to make art projects. At that time, I was seriously pursuing violin as a profession until I realized that my real passion was art.
YH: Do you still play the violin?
PS: Of course, as a hobby.
YH: Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert person?
PS: Extrovert.
YH: Do you enjoy having lunch out?
PS: Yeah, really much.
YH: What restaurants would you recommend us nearby?
PS: La Docena, Rosetta, Parnita, Máximo Bistro, Sartoria, Meroma, Rokai and Sushi Kyo at Havre 77.
YH: Cool and unusual things to do in Berlin?
PS: Restaurants: Grill Royal and Trois Minutes sur Mer.
Store: Murkudis has the best selection of all.
Bar: Würgeengel is my absolute favorite, they’ve got the best Whiskey Sour.

Polina vivió en seis ciudades antes de establecerce en la Ciudad de México. Nació en Moscú, estudió Historia del Arte y Teoría en Arte Contemporaneo en la Universidad de Lüneburg. Formó parte del Departamento de Educación en documenta12; fue directora y coordinadora de la Galerie Crone en Berlín y Londres, y directora de 401contemporary. A su llegada a México en 2013, realizó proyectos de curaduría con Sofía Mariscal de Galería MARSO y fue consultora especial de la primera edición de Material Art Fair. Desde 2014 hasta la fecha es directora de Proyectos Monclova.
Una de las preguntas que traía en mente al llegar a casa de Polina era si coleccionaba arte. Una pregunta tal vez tonta por tratarse de una galerísta, pero alguna vez leí que Marina Abramović no tiene una sola pieza colgada en las paredes de su casa, y podría darse el caso. Mi duda se contestó al segundo en que Polina abrió la puerta.

YH: Polina, ¿qué es lo que más te gusta de México?
PS: Muchas cosas pero me gusta la mentalidad abierta.
YH: ¿Qué es lo que más extrañas de Rusia?
PS: De los rusos un cierto sentido del humor y una calidez que es difícil de entender. Los rusos pueden tener una mentalidad pesada pero tienen una generosidad y calidez muy particular.
YH: ¿Qué te llevó al arte?
PS: Crecí en un ámbito creativo. Mis papas eran arquitectos y además hacían proyectos artísticos. Estudié para violinista hasta que me dí cuenta que lo que realmente me apasionaba era el arte.
YH: ¿Sigues tocando el violín?
PS: Sí, como hobby
YH: Te consideras una persona extrovertida o introvertida?
PS: Extrovertida
YH: Te gusta salir a comer?
PS: Si, me encanta
